Thumb Rule for Estimation of various materials used while Building Construction

1) Thumb Rule for Steel Quantity required for Slab, Beams, Columns, Footings :

a) For residential buildings   = 4.5 - 4.75 kgs/sqft
b) For commercial buildings = 5.0 - 5.50 kgs/sqft

2) Thumb Rule for Percentage of Steel in Structural Members :

a) Slab = 1% of total vol. of conc.
b) Beam = 2% of total vol. of conc.
c) Column = 2.5% of total vol. of conc.
d) Footing = 0.8 % of total vol. of conc.

e.g. Slab size = 5m x 4m x 0.15m

Total Volume = 5 x 4 x 0.15 = 3m^3

Steel reqd. for Slab
=(Vol. of conc.) X (Density of steel) X (% of steel)
=3 x 7850 x 0.01
=235.5kg

3) Thumb Rule for estation of Shuttering area :

Shuttering cost is taken as 15-18% of total construction cost of building.
                           OR
Shuttering required is 6times quantity of concrete.
                           OR
Shuttering required is 2.4times of plinth area.

4) Thumb Rule for estimation of Shuttering Ply :

No. of shuttering ply sheets reqd.
= 0.22 x shuttering area

5) Thumb Rule for estimation of Batten quantity:

Batten Qty. = 19.82 x No. of Ply Sheets

6) 75gms of nails are used in Shuttering of 1m^2 area.

7) 75gms of Binding Wire is used for every 1m^2 of Shuttering.

8) Estimation Shuttering Oil :

Shuttering Oil required
= 0.065 x total area of Shuttering
                             OR
For every 15m^2 of Shuttering 1litre of Shuttering oil is consumed.
